Another quick month is coming to an end! In February we recorded our members Valentines singing project – members sang a mix of ‘call me maybe’ and ‘bleeding love’. This followed on from our Christmas singing project which members really enjoyed and this one was no different!
This song was then performed at our Valentines Ball as well as being on a cd that members could take home with them.
The dates-n-mates Aberdeen Valentines Ball this year was held at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel at Aberdeen beach. This venue was really nice and the staff were great. At this event we had a surprise entertainer and host which we had not confirmed to members beforehand, so this was a fun extra addition to the evening. Our host for the evening was Barbara La Bush who is a Drag Queen act who has previously performed at dates-n-mates Glasgow events. She was fabulous!
Barbara performed some songs and dances including an interactive dance for staff and members to join in with. You can view a sample video of Barbara on our Facebook page. Also, on the night there was a buffet, cupcakes, valentines message board and raffle with some great local donated prizes. The evening ended with our members performing their Valentines song and then a DJ who helped fill the dancefloor. It was really a great evening from start to finish – enjoyed by all with some great feedback received.
We would like to say thank you to everyone at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel for their assistance along with Barbara la Bush, the DJ from Prestige Discos, our volunteer Sofie and everyone who attended for making this such a great night.
Other activities in February included going to the cinema to see Black Panther and a pub evening at local city centre pub, Siberia.
We also held our ‘Take me out’ dating evening for members at the Cotton Club again – we had a few new matches made which staff have been following up since then. Members seem to enjoy this form of dating – we will be introducing a new dating event in March which is based on another popular TV dating show. There will also be another dates-n-mates national take me out for all bases in March – held by dates-n-mates Renfrewshire.
Members also attended the Banchory Beer Festival in February as our first 2018 Aberdeenshire event. This was a fun day out which included live music, a bar and food stalls. This was one of our favourite Aberdeenshire events with members to date.
February was also the month that Robert Gordon University Event Management students held their fundraising event for us. Our Event Coordinator, Louise, has been mentoring 4 RGU students in their final year of their Event Management degree to organise a fundraising event for the project. They organised all aspects of the event including extra fundraising activities before the main day. Their “Tastes O’ The Shire” evening took place on the 24th of February attended by almost 50 people including some of our dates-n-mates members along with staff Louise & Peter. The evening focused on food tasting with a 3-course menu including a surprise starter where attendees were encouraged to wear blindfolds and guess the food item to win a prize! The night was really good fun and they successfully raised over £1700 for us.
We will provide further details on this fundraising connection in a separate post to follow soon. For now, we would like to say a very big THANK YOU AND WELL DONE to the students – Anna, Maya, Erin and Emma!
It has been another good month with much more to look forward to over coming months too.
